CRUD is an acronym for Create, Read, Update, and Delete. The typical approach is to create stored procedures for each of these actions for every table in the database. With a fully normalized database structure, this means there would be many of these CRUD procedures that may not be very useful. By updating records in a piecemeal way, performance can suffer. By grouping CRUD functionality into planned-out stored procedures, it is possible to update multiple tables at a time without multiple trips to the database. As a result, there will not always be four stored procedures per database table.

Fortunately, it s not too difficult. ASP.NET MVC uses a concept called value providers to describe data that arrives with an HTTP request (you ll learn more about these in 12). The following utility method sets up a value provider containing an arbitrary collection of values. Add this to UnitTestHelpers:

Stored procedures do more than just return the results of a Select statement. A stored procedure may just set the value of an output parameter. In the case of saving data to the database, it may just return the key value of the saved record. Listing 3-3 shows how a person is saved. The unit test must supply a FormCollection instance with valid values because TryUpdateModel() will apply your validation rules against them. This gives you a way to specify examples of valid and invalid form data. That might sound like a good idea, but in fact it s mixing two unrelated concerns (the definition of valid data and the way the action processes the request). In this example we don t have much choice, but generally you should be cautious about how often you mix concerns like this; otherwise, long-term maintenance may become expensive.
